Why you should tether your Starlink Mini (and how)
Magnetic mounts on flat steel hold an order of magnitude more force than highway wind produces. Tether it anyway. Here's the five-minute version.
Why bother if the magnets hold 100+ pounds?
Because the tether isn't for wind. The math on wind is settled (we did the arithmetic in the highway speed guide). The tether is for everything the math doesn't model:
- You set the dish down on a leaf, dust film, or ice you didn't notice, and contact was never full.
- A branch or road debris strikes the dish directly.
- Someone repositions it at camp half-asleep and one magnet foot hangs off the edge.
- A curious set of hands at a trailhead lifts it to look. A tether makes a grab-and-run awkward.
Every one of those is rare. All of them together, over years of trips, are not that rare. A tether costs a few dollars and five minutes, and turns each one into a non-event. A $599 dish deserves a $5 backup plan.
How to rig it
- Use coated wire rope or 550 paracord, 18 to 24 inches. Coated cable won't chew your powder coat or paint; paracord is quieter in the wind.
- Anchor to structure, not trim. A rack crossbar, a bolted accessory point, or the tether hole on the Starlink Plate. Never a plastic fairing clip.
- Attach at the dish's kickstand slot or mount frame, not the cable. The power cable and its connector should never be the thing that catches a falling dish.
- Leave a little slack. A drum-tight tether transmits vibration and hums at speed. A soft loop stays silent and still catches everything.
- Give the cable its own strain relief. While you're there, loop the power cable to the rack with a velcro tie so a tug at the dish end never loads the connector.
The failure most people actually have
For what it's worth: across the forum threads and reviews we've read, dishes almost never blow off. The reported losses are partial-contact placements on curved or dirty surfaces, and cables yanked out at the connector. Flat clean steel fixes the first, strain relief fixes the second, and the tether covers whatever is left.
